Beaver gets first win of season

Vero Beach, FL---- On Day 2 of their spring trip, Penn State Beaver went 1-1 and their season record now stands at 1-3 overall. The Lions opened up the day by facing Inside Pitch Acadamy at 9am. Beaver lost the contest by a score of 6-3 and only managed 3 hits in the contest. Billy Harrington (Monaca, Central Valley) had the lone RBI when he knocked in Tim Smith (Pittsburgh, Langley) in the 5th inning and in that same inning Harrington would score on a double steal and Alex Filippi (Aliquippa, Center) scored on a passed ball. Freshman Matt Sweikowski pitched well in his first college start, going 4 and 2/3 innings giving up 3 earned runs on 9 hits while striking out 5.

In game two, Beaver's offense finally showed up on the trip as they had 22 hits on their way to a 14-0 victory over Gatineau Baseball Club. Freshman Michael Ross (New Castle, Neshannock) brought a no-hitter into the sixth inning in his first college start as he pitched an excellent game on the way to his first college victory. Ross surrendered just 1 hit in six innings of work and struck out 11 batters. Grant Scott (Sewickley, Ann Arbor Pioneer), Tom Lewis (Aliquippa, Hopewell), Cory Wagner (Monaca, Center) and Brandon Rowan (New Brighton, New Brighton) each finished with two hits while Harrington and Jordan Price (Conway, Freedom) finished the game with three hits. Harrington and Wagner both had 2 RBI's.

Beaver will play again tomorrow morning at 9am when they play Rochester College for a 9 inning game.
